Meet the Band

 

Were Sanne, Gerben, Jan, Herman, Lara... and I'm Ilana, we are Fallout GroundZero.

So... who are we?

That's actually a more difficult question than you might expect.

We're six people who found each other through a shared passion for music, creativity and the desire to create something honest. Fallout GroundZero wasn't built overnight, and it certainly wasn't assembled by simply looking for the best players. It grew because the right people came together at the right time. The first person to truly impress me was Sanne. After hearing one of his demo recordings, I knew within minutes I wanted to hear more. His playing was confident without ever becoming arrogant, technical without losing emotion. Every riff served the song instead of trying to steal the spotlight. That musical maturity immediately stood out and became one of the foundations of our sound.

Not long after, Gerben became part of the project. Many drummers impress with speed or complicated fills. Gerard impressed me for a completely different reason. He instinctively knows exactly what a song needs. He understands when to push the music forward and when holding back creates even more impact. His drumming provides the heartbeat that keeps every song alive. As our music continued to evolve, Jan added another voice to the guitars. Two guitarists only work when they truly understand each other. Jan never competes for attention. Instead, he creates melodies, textures and harmonies that perfectly complement Sanne's playing. Some of my favorite moments aren't the loudest solos, but the subtle guitar lines that reveal themselves after you've listened to a song a few times. Atmosphere became just as important as melody, and that's where Herman found his place.

Keyboards can easily overwhelm a rock song, but Herman understands restraint better than most. Whether it's a delicate piano phrase, a cinematic pad or an almost invisible layer in the background, he always knows exactly what the music needs. His contribution is often subtle, but without it the songs simply wouldn't feel the same. By then, it became clear that Fallout GroundZero was never just about finding talented musicians. It was about finding the right people. People willing to invest countless evenings, rewrite songs, solve technical problems, overcome setbacks and continue believing in a project that was still growing. Independent music isn't glamorous. Behind every finished song are rough demos, endless revisions, late-night conversations and the determination to make every note count.

Those experiences became part of who we are.

Every challenge made us stronger. Every mistake taught us something. Every conversation brought us closer together. Today, when I listen to our music, I don't just hear guitars, drums or keyboards. I hear every step of the journey that brought us here. Then Lara joined us. She completed the picture. Her voice doesn't simply sit on top of the music—it becomes part of it. She has a remarkable ability to transform vulnerability into strength, adding warmth, emotion and depth to every harmony. Her vocals gave our songs another dimension and helped shape the sound Fallout GroundZero has today.

And finally, there's me, Ilana.

As the songwriter and primary lyricist, my role is to weave our collective experiences and emotions into narratives that resonate. I strive to give voice to the unspoken, to craft words that complement the intricate melodies and rhythms our band creates. It's a privilege to translate our shared journey into songs that hopefully connect with your own stories.

In the end, we're more than a band.

We're six people with different backgrounds, influences and personalities, united by one shared vision: to create honest music that connects with people. Every member has their own voice, but together we've created something that none of us could have achieved alone.

Looking back at these songs, I realize they are all chapters of the same journey. They are not about perfection or easy answers. They are about people searching for connection, carrying invisible battles, learning to trust again, and finding the strength to keep moving forward. Every lyric begins in uncertainty or pain, but none of them stay there. Even in the darkest moments, there is always a choice to keep walking, to keep loving, and to keep believing that empathy is stronger than fear.

The common thread is authenticity. I write about mental health, loneliness, grief, relationships, identity, equality, domestic violence, resilience, and hope because these are real experiences that shape our generation. My songs are built around emotional honesty rather than heroes or villains. They invite the listener into the thoughts behind the silence, where vulnerability becomes strength and where being truly seen is often the beginning of healing. Every chorus is meant to transform reflection into determination, turning private emotions into something people can sing together.

Above everything else, this music is about humanity. It is written from my point of view, but it belongs to everyone who has ever felt invisible, misunderstood, or afraid to be themselves. I don't write to tell people what to think. I write to start conversations, to challenge indifference, and to remind people that compassion, respect, equality, and connection are still worth fighting for. If these songs leave listeners feeling less alone than they did before, then they have already achieved everything I hoped they would.

Recently, Sanne has started recording a few songs of his own. Like any developing vocalist, he's still finding his voice and growing into the role, but that's exactly what makes the journey interesting. What immediately stands out is his raw deep baritone voice, full of character and emotion, with a natural depth that's well worth listening to and investing in.

He recently bought a second hand vocal recording setup and has been teaching himself to record and express his ideas at his own pace. Rather than chasing perfection, he's focused on honesty. Every recording shows a little more confidence, a little more personality, and another step forward as a singer and songwriter.

For the band, this adds another layer to our music. Different voices bring different perspectives, emotions, and stories. It strengthens our sound, introduces a new point of view that complements what we already do. We believe growth takes time, and we're excited to let you hear that journey unfold, one song at a time.
